August at Be Well

As summer winds down, we’re looking forward to returning to the familiar rhythms of fall. Whether your practice has been steady or a little scattered, there’s always a welcoming place for you at Be Well.

Our fall schedule offers a thoughtful mix of familiar weekly classes, specialty practices, and seasonal offerings that support strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, rest, and renewal. Some class names have been updated to better reflect the experience of each practice, but the classes you know and enjoy remain the same in structure and intention.

Specialty classes return in September with Sound Immersion, Yin, Restorative, the popular Yang-to-Yin practice, and Barb’s new offering, Yoga and Sleep: Unlock the Secrets to Restful Sleep. Specialty classes are included with studio memberships and are available to non-members for $30.

We’ll also offer Foundations of Yoga, a two-part introductory series for those who are new to yoga or would like to revisit the basics. During two 45-minute sessions, participants will explore foundational postures, approachable alignment, breathing, simple transitions, and the use of common yoga props. The series provides a comfortable and supportive foundation for beginning a yoga journey and joining other practices at Be Well.

Reflections

Over the past year, we've explored the Yamas and Niyamas, ten teachings that invite us to consider how we relate to ourselves, to one another, and to the world around us. In August, we'll review these concepts and notice how they may already be showing up in our practices, our choices, and our everyday lives. Rather than thinking of the Yamas and Niyamas as rules to follow perfectly, we can understand them as gentle points of reflection. They remind us that yoga is more than what happens in a pose. Yoga can also be found in the ways we practice kindness, honesty, contentment, self-study, balance, and care. The following prompts offer a gentle way to notice how the Yamas and Niyamas are living in your practice and daily life.

  • Which Yama or Niyama has stayed with you most strongly, and why?

  • Where do you notice these teachings already showing up in your daily life or practice?

  • Is there one teaching you would like to carry forward with greater awareness or intention?

In September, we'll begin an exploration of the Chakras. Each month, we will explore one of the seven larger chakras through movement, breath, meditation, and reflection.

Community

Through the end of September, we’ll be supporting the Kalamazoo Log Cabin Quilters’ Lovie Project. Each year, the quilters pair handmade quilts with stuffed animals to create comforting gifts for children experiencing illness, trauma, abuse, crisis, or other significant life changes. Be Well will be collecting new, medium-sized stuffed animals (approximately 8–15 inches tall) with tags still attached. Donations should be clean, free of strong scents, and have no small or removable pieces that could pose a choking hazard. Each stuffed animal will become part of a Lovie, offering warmth, comfort, and a gentle reminder that someone cares.

Inspiring Yogis...

...whose steady presence, kind energy, and love for the practice help shape our sangha in the most beautiful ways.
